WICHITA, Kan. – Cargill Meat Solutions donated 94,520 pounds of ground beef to America’s Second Harvest, the Nation’s Food Bank Network. The donation, the largest ground beef donation in Second Harvest’s 26-year history, allowed member food banks to produce high-protein meals for the men, women, children and elderly citizens they serve each day.
“We thank Cargill for its generous donation of ground beef product to our cause of eliminating hunger across the United States,” said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO, Second Harvest. “The people we serve are always thankful when we can provide them with meals containing protein, such as ground beef. This donation will make the difference in thousands of lives in several cities in the United States.”
Second Harvest distributed five truckloads of Cargill ground beef product (two trucks from Cargill’s Friona, Tex., plant and three trucks from Cargill’s Schuyler, Neb., plant) to member food banks located in Houston, San Antonio, Salt Lake City and Nashville, Tenn. The food banks used the ground beef to make entrees, including King Ranch Beef Casserole, Hamburger Stroganoff, Beef Enchilada Casserole, Spaghetti Bolognese and Sloppy Joes. All entrees were matched with a starch, such as pasta, rice or potatoes, and a mix of vegetables and beans.
“Cargill is honored to work with great community partners like Second Harvest,” said Bill Rupp, president, Cargill Meat Solutions. “We want to be the global leader in Nourishing Ideas and Nourishing People, and this is one way that we are able to help thousands of less fortunate people. But the real honor goes to the dedicated staff at the food banks around the United States for the work they do each day to make sure people in need have the opportunity to eat nutritious meals each day.”
