Excel Beef receives Cargill Business Excellence Award

WICHITA, KS, October 2, 2002 - Excel Corporation's beef business unit received the Cargill Business Excellence Award. The beef business unit also received a Cargill Chairman's Innovation Award for its work on a ranch-to-retail alliance program for producing consistently tender beef.
The Business Excellence Award is accorded to Cargill, Incorporated businesses that achieve high performance in areas affecting employees, customers, partners, communities and other stakeholders. Excel's beef business unit has received the honor several times in recent years.
Based in Wichita, Excel is a subsidiary of Cargill, which holds the award program every other year. Excel's beef business unit has facilities in Dodge City, KS; Plainview and Friona, TX; Schuyler, NE; Ft. Morgan, CO; Wyalusing, PA; and High River, Alberta, Canada.
"The Cargill judges looked favorably on a program we use at Excel to involve our employees and improve the way we do business," said Bill Rupp, executive vice president of Excel and leader of the beef business unit. "Ultimately, the dedication of the Excel beef team has helped us deliver consistently great tasting beef to our customers and consumers."
Excel's beef business unit also received a Cargill Chairman's Innovation Award for its Rancher's Registry project.
An Excel team spent the last five years developing the program, which involves ranchers, cattle feeders, Excel and retailers to deliver consistently tender beef. The program includes more than 24 control points from ranch to retail.
Meanwhile, the beef business unit and other Cargill Meat Solutions Platform businesses received the Cargill President's Award for Environment Health and Safety. Excel Beef, Excel Pork, Excel Case Ready, North American Turkey and Emmpak were cited for integrating environment, health and safety efforts into the daily operations of their business.
